Five Arrested Near UK Air Base Used by US Forces on Terror Suspicion

British police arrested five men early Sunday near RAF Fairford, a UK-owned, US-operated air base in Gloucestershire, England, on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act — triggering evacuations and a major security response.

What Happened

London's Metropolitan Police said officers received a call around 12:45 a.m. local time reporting three suspicious vehicles traveling toward RAF Fairford. Armed officers responded and arrested five men in the nearby Whelford area, initially on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act, before the arrests were escalated to suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. Police declared a major incident, and a bomb disposal team was brought in to examine the vehicles, while a 400-meter cordon was established around the site. Vicki Evans, deputy assistant police commissioner and national coordinator for counter-terrorism policing in the UK, said the investigation remains in its early stages and that all five men remain in custody.

The Evacuation

Around 85 households in the village of Whelford were evacuated as a precaution, with residents moved to a nearby recreation center. One resident told the BBC that a neighbor had reported three vans arriving in the village in the middle of the night, prompting the call to police. Helicopter footage showed a bomb disposal robot operating near the parked vehicles, though police have not confirmed which vehicles were directly connected to the incident.

Why RAF Fairford Matters

RAF Fairford has played a notable role in the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran. The UK government authorized American forces to use the base to strike Iranian missile sites after the war began in February. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has previously described bases used for strikes against it, including Fairford, as legitimate targets, and security at the base has reportedly been increased in recent weeks following earlier threat warnings. Police have not confirmed any direct link between Sunday's arrests and the base's military role.

Official Response

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged the public not to speculate about the incident and thanked residents for cooperating with the evacuation, emphasizing that public safety remained the top priority. A spokesperson for the US Air Force said personnel at the base "remain vigilant," without detailing specific security measures.

Why This Matters

This incident highlights the heightened security concerns surrounding military infrastructure tied to the ongoing Middle East conflict, particularly for facilities in allied countries supporting US operations. With the investigation still in its early stages, officials have been careful not to draw conclusions about motive or intent, and further details are expected as the inquiry develops.
