China's CXMT Plans NAND Flash Expansion as AI Drives Global Memory Demand
Chinese memory-chip manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, is preparing to expand into the NAND flash memory market as demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure increases pressure on global memory supplies.
The move would take CXMT beyond its traditional focus on DRAM memory and place it in competition with major global manufacturers including Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, as well as China's Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp. (YMTC).
Why NAND Flash Matters
NAND flash is a type of non-volatile memory widely used in:
- Smartphones
- Computers
- Solid-state drives
- Data centers
- AI infrastructure
The rapid expansion of AI servers is increasing demand for storage and memory products, contributing to tighter supplies in parts of the global memory market.
CXMT Plans Beijing R&D Production Line
According to Reuters sources, CXMT plans to establish an R&D production line for NAND chips at its new facility in Beijing.
The company has also reportedly begun discussions with potential customers, including an AI-focused startup.
The expansion would mark an important strategic step for CXMT as it attempts to diversify beyond DRAM and enter another major segment of the memory-chip industry.
China's Semiconductor Push
CXMT's NAND ambitions also fit into China's broader strategy of developing a more self-reliant semiconductor industry.
China has been investing heavily in domestic chip manufacturing while U.S. export restrictions have made access to some advanced semiconductor technologies more difficult.
CXMT and YMTC have traditionally focused on different areas of the memory market, but rising AI demand and tight supplies could bring the two Chinese companies into greater competition.
Global Memory Competition Could Intensify
CXMT's expansion comes as other major memory companies are also considering additional NAND capacity. Reuters reported separately that SK Hynix's Solidigm unit is considering a potential NAND manufacturing facility in the United States.
That highlights how AI-driven demand is reshaping investment decisions across the global memory industry.
CXMT's planned NAND expansion could add another major competitor to an already highly competitive global memory market. More broadly, the move shows how the AI boom is increasing demand for memory technology while accelerating China's efforts to strengthen its domestic semiconductor capabilities.
