AI Boom Is Creating New Financial Stability Risks, BIS Warns

The artificial intelligence boom is no longer just a technology story.

It is becoming a major economic and financial story as companies pour hundreds of billions of dollars into data centers, chips, computing infrastructure and AI systems.

The Bank for International Settlements is now warning that the scale of the investment boom could create new risks for financial stability.

An Investment Race

The world’s biggest technology companies are investing enormous amounts of money to expand their AI capabilities.

The BIS estimates that the five largest global technology firms are expected to invest more than $1 trillion in AI during 2025 and 2026.

Industry forecasts suggest global AI investment could eventually reach several trillion dollars.

The opportunity is huge—but so is the financial commitment.

Where Is the Risk?

One major concern is that AI infrastructure investment increasingly requires external financing.

Companies are spending heavily on data centers, servers, networking equipment, electricity and other infrastructure before the full economic returns from those investments are known.

If AI revenues and productivity gains grow as expected, the investment could generate enormous economic benefits.

But if returns disappoint, companies and investors could suddenly become more cautious.

That could trigger a slowdown in investment and put pressure on financial markets.

AI and the Global Economy

The AI boom is also changing how central banks view the economy.

AI can simultaneously influence productivity, employment, business investment, demand, financial markets and energy consumption.

That makes it harder for policymakers to determine how quickly economies are changing.

There is also a growing physical infrastructure challenge.

AI data centers require enormous quantities of electricity, while shortages in power generation, grid equipment and advanced semiconductors could create bottlenecks.

Could AI Become Another Investment Bubble?

History offers several examples of major technological breakthroughs attracting enormous amounts of capital before investors fully understood the eventual returns.

The railway boom and dot-com era are among the historical examples frequently discussed in relation to today’s AI investment cycle.

That does not mean AI is a bubble.

The technology is already producing real productivity gains and transforming industries.

The bigger question is whether the current level of investment can generate enough economic returns to justify the extraordinary amount of capital being committed.

For businesses, investors and policymakers, that question could become one of the defining economic issues of the AI era.
