New Zealand Moves Closer to Social Media Ban for Under-16s

New Zealand is moving closer to introducing legislation that would restrict social media access for children under the age of 16.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has backed the proposed measure, which would require social media platforms to take reasonable steps to verify the age of users. Possible verification methods include existing account information, facial recognition technology and digital identity documents.

The proposal has gained additional political support after the country's main opposition Labour Party said it would support legislation banning social media access for under-16s.

Supporters argue that stronger restrictions could help protect young people from harmful online content and potential impacts on sleep, education and family life.

However, the proposal has also raised concerns about privacy, age verification and the responsibility of parents versus technology companies.

If introduced, New Zealand's approach could become another important test of how governments around the world regulate children's access to social media.
